When different sorts of material are meant, both the definite and the indefinite articles are used.
Uncountable nouns expressing abstract notions in a general sense have no article. Abstract noun's are used with the definite article when they have limiting Attribute.
When an uncountable abstract noun has an attribute expressing a variety of quality, state, feeling, etc. denoted by the noun, the indefinite article is used.
